Getting started

How do I become a client?

Book a free 20-minute Teams call or request a quote. We'll send you a fixed price, and if you're happy, you sign our engagement letter online. We then get authorisation from HMRC to act for you and take it from there.

Is it difficult to switch from my current accountant?

Not at all, and you can switch at any time of year. Once you've signed with us, we contact your previous accountant for handover information and take over as your agent with HMRC. We check your upcoming deadlines straight away so nothing gets missed.

Do I need to use any special app or software?

No. Unlike many large online firms, we don't make you learn an app. Send your documents by email or WhatsApp and we'll do the rest using HMRC-recognised software on our side.

Do you only work with clients near Romford?

No. We work remotely with clients all over the UK. Consultations take place on Microsoft Teams or by phone, and everything else is handled online.

What documents will you need from me?

It depends on your business, but usually bank statements, sales invoices, purchase receipts, payroll records (if any) and your HMRC and Companies House details. We'll send you a simple checklist when you join.

Pricing

Do your prices include VAT?

No. Our prices are shown excluding VAT, and VAT is added to your invoice.

Why do you charge monthly?

A fixed monthly fee spreads the cost evenly across the year, so there's no big bill at year-end. It also means you can contact us during the year without worrying about being charged by the hour.

Can I change my package later?

Yes. If your business grows, for example you register for VAT or take on staff, we'll move you to the package that fits.

How much does a sole trader or landlord tax return cost?

It depends on your income sources and how your records are kept, so we quote individually. Request a quote and we'll send you a fixed price.

Limited companies

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your profits, plans and how you want to pay yourself. A limited company can be more tax-efficient once profits reach a certain level, but comes with more admin. We'll go through the numbers with you on a free call.

When are my company's accounts and Corporation Tax due?

For most private companies, accounts are due at Companies House 9 months after the year end, Corporation Tax must be paid 9 months and 1 day after the year end, and the CT600 return is due 12 months after. Use our deadline calculator to see your dates.

Do I need to file accounts if my company didn't trade?

Yes. Dormant companies still need to file annual accounts and a confirmation statement with Companies House. We can prepare and file dormant accounts for you.

When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register if your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily below this, and sometimes it makes sense to.

Do directors need to verify their identity with Companies House?

Yes. Identity verification is being introduced for all company directors and people with significant control. Existing directors need to verify within the transition period, usually by the time of the company's next confirmation statement. We can tell you what to do and when.

Personal tax

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

You usually do if you're self-employed, a company director taking dividends, a landlord, or you have other untaxed income over certain limits. If you're not sure, ask us and we'll check.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Since April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. We can handle it all for you.

Can I get a CIS tax refund?

Many CIS subcontractors are owed money, because the 20% deducted doesn't account for your personal allowance or expenses like tools, travel and workwear. We claim it back through your Self Assessment tax return.

What are payments on account?

If your Self Assessment bill is over £1,000, HMRC usually asks for advance payments towards next year's tax: half by 31 January and half by 31 July. We'll explain exactly what to pay and when.
